3. Iran, which was previously known as Persia, has been a great civilization for 7000 years now. The civilization of Persia was very powerful and fought both Greece and Rome in major wars. Persians have had very strong culture, language and identity; in short, Persians were proud to be Persian. Islam took over Persia in the seventh century, an event known as the Islamization of Persia. During the sixteenth century, Persia's first all-religious government was in reign. This government was Shi'a Muslim and had both a king and a parliament.

1. Muslim is people who practice the religion of Islam. Secular is a non religious government.
2. The shi'ites believe the leader must be related to Muhammad (founder of Islam) They also focus on heritage, monarchy, tradition and they put a lot of importance on the leader of Islam. The sunnis believe that the leader should be the right man to do the job, the leader must be the man who can live the best muslim life you can live. They focus on practicing the religion and the leadership.
3. Iran(known as Persia until 1935) was home to oldest human civilizations leading back to 7000 years ago. Persia was very powerful and fought against Greece and Rome. The Persians were very proud to be Persians because they were proud of their strong culture, language (Farsi), and identity. In the 16th century, Persia was taken over by Muslims. (Islamization.) Persia was part of the Shi'a Muslim branch and 80% of all the shi'ites (20% of all muslims) lived in Persia. Arabic was then introduced to Persia and they had kings and paralments. In 1925, Reza Kahn overthrew the leaders of Persia and became "Reza Shah" (Shah meaning leader.) He and his son wanted to restore Persian culture and make persia more western. In 1941, Reza shah gave his power to his son, Mohammad Reza Palavi ("The Shah") who wanted to separate Persian ways from Islam. (Both he and his father agreed on this and were both secular men.) When the shah took power, he added infrastructure to Iran and modernized/ westernized Iran. During 1953-1976 the Iranians enjoyed the new contemporary music, books, clothes, education, and technology. To keep his power and make iran look glorify, The shah had a secret service team who tortured all people who were against the government. Eventually the second revolution happened. In early 1978, religious muslims protested against the shah because he was helped by the U.S and the muslims felt they lost their roots and they felt they gave up too much. The shah fled from Iran and in 1979 Iran transformed from contemporary to Islamic republic. The new leader was Ayotollah Khomeini who was a Shi'ite (he wasn't related to Muhammad but he claimed to be so people believed him.) He was very strict and this was the second time Iran's government was religious. Under this new leader, Women had very few rights and life became less culturally and socially rich.
4. The Reza shah and the shah were secular so they believed that Islam should be separate from Persian culture.
5. The islamic revolution occured because the muslims felt that they lost their muslamic roots and they were mad at the shah because the shah wouldn't listen to them and they felt they gave up to much religeous practices for cultural things.
6. The shah was more cultualistic and liked modern and westernized things (technology infrastructure.) and ayotollah khomeni was super strict on religion and didn't like culturalistic stuff.

Ok...
1. A Muslim is someone who studies and practices the religion of Islam, and it is devided into two major groups: Sunni Muslims and Shi'ite Muslims. Secular means non-religious.
2. The Sunni Muslims believed that the next leader after Muhammad's death should be the best leader regardless of his relationship to Muhammad, and they value leadership, religion, faith, and not relationships. The Shi'a Muslims wanted the next leader to be a relative of Muhhamad and valued heritage; so basically the Shi'a's desired a Monarchy while the Sunni'a desired a democracy.
3. Dating back to 7,000 years ago, Iran, previously known as Persia until 1935, had a powerful empire that fought huge wars against Greece and Rome, and had a strong culture, language (Farsi and Arabic), and identity. After the growing power of Muslim armies began to threaten Persia, Persia was taken over by Islamic armies! Then, in the 16th century C.E., the first Shi'a Muslim, non-secular, government was established with both a king and a parliament. Just so you know, the Muslims spoke Arabic and Farsi and the capitol is Tehran.
4.Reza Shah and The Shah both were secular, and were interested in restoring the Persian pride and culture, and wanted to separate Persia from Muslim ways by modernizing Iran's infrastructure with a European influence.
5. The religious Muslims (Shi'ite)began to protest in streets against the Shah, the workers went on strike and the economy suffered, and within a year the Shah's support collapsed because he was close with the U.S., so he fleed the country and the prosperous, pro-western country turned into an Islamic Republic with a new leader named Ayatollah Khomeini.
6. With The Shah, people lived with fashion, food, art, culture, and prosperity. With Ayatollah, women were not treated equally and some of men's priveleges were taken away, so it was more strict. So, life was less culturally and socially rich after the revolution.

Long time, no post~

1. Muslim- one who is loyal to the religion of Islam.
Secular- non-religious.

2. Shi'a Muslims believe that only members of Muhammad's bloodline should inherit the "throne" of Persia, while Sunnis think that whoever is best at leading the country should lead the country. Ancestry and heritage are very important to Shi'ites, but not to Sunnis.

3. Persia was one of the first places in the world to be inhabited by humans. Persia was a huge civilization, and its culture was magnificent. Persians were proud to be Persians - proud of their religion and language. However, in the 16th century, the non-secular Saudi Arabians brought the Islam faith over to the west. This event was known as the Islamization of Persia, and during this period of time, Islam interwove with the native Persian culture, including language; now the two official languages of Iran are Arabic and Farsi. There was both a king and a prime minister (or whatever they called him back then). In 1925, Reza Shah took over and changed the country's name to Iran in 1935. During WWII, he let his son, Mohammed Pahlavi (again, his name immediately points to the fusion of the two cultures), take his position as shah. After that, Iran's westernization flourished and it became a much more modern country. However, there were riots and revolts against Pahlavi (better known as just The Shah) and in 1980, the Shi'a Muslims took over again and the government became the second non-secular one in the history of Iran.

4. Reza Shah and The Shah both believed in "westernizing" and making Iran more modern. They were against religion.

5. As stated above, there were revolts against The Shah. The Shah was secular, and some citizens just didn't like that because they were religious themselves. Also, the SAVAK, the police of The Shah, were very harsh if someone spoke out against the secular-ness of The Shah's reign and soon, these "attacks" were going too far. This contributed to the Islamic Revolution, when Ayatollah Khomeini became ruler and transformed the then-blossoming nation of Iran into a Muslim community where all children could do was go to school, go home to study the Quran, and pray.
6. The Shah was secular. Ayatollah believed in Islamic rule.

(Phew.)

Iran Questions:

1. muslim = an adherent of the religion of Islam. Muslims believe that there is only one God named Allah. They also believe Islam exsisted long before Muhammed. The word muslim means "one who submits(to God)."

secular = it means being seperate from a religion. For example: if you bathe, it's your choice to and your religion doesn't tell you if you should bathe or not.

2. Sunni muslims agree with the position taken by many of the Prophets companions; that the newest leader should be elected from among the people capable for the job.
Shia muslims believe that after Muhammed, they should follow the prophet that leadership should be passed to either a son, which Muhammemd didn't have, and if not that, a cousin or son-in-law.

3. Iran's History:
*Iran was in the past known as Persia
* Iran has been here for 7000 years
* Two revolutions Iran has been through is 1, where Reza Shah took over the all religous shia muslim government.
* The 2nd revolution happened when the Shia muslims took over the government again. This was the very strict and powerful times.

4. Reza Shah and The Shah thought Iran needed/should have the modern infrastructure that came from the ideas of different areas like the U.S. for example: they added technology that was in the U.S. into Iram..ect.

5. The religous muslims who didn't like the government began to proteest on the streets. The economy life weakened greatly and people spoke out to the Savak. Now, college students spoke out and they thought Iran was losing all it's culture. There was public uprising and people were going to kill The Shah, Reza Shah and the Savak; so..they fled. This was the Islamic Revolution.

6. The Shah believed in making happiness and making his country more Westernized/ modern and Ayatollah believed that everything should be religous and all you do after school/work is read the Quaren

3. Iran is one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations dating back 7000 years. Iran was named Persia up to 1935. Persia was a great, powerful nation and they fought huge wars. After the birth of Islam, Iran slowly became less powerful. that was known as the Islamization of Persia. The cultures began to merge. The Muslims in Iran were mainly Shi'a, in fact, 80% of the Muslims were Shi'a. Later on, Iran wanted to modernize. they had a constitutional Monarchy. In 1925, Reza Khan overthrew the leaders and became Shah. Then his name was Reza Shah. When Britain and Russia invaded Iran in 1941, Reza Shah gave his power to his son, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. Mohammed was later known as "The Shah." Both of them were interested in storing Persian pride and culture from the Muslim ways that had dominated for so long. Both Reza Khan and The Shah were secular. The Shah modernized Iranian infrastructure. It made him more popular and Iran was rolling. The Shah had a security system called SAVAK and they killed, they were brutal. People did not like that, people started to riot and their economy rioted against the Shah. The new leader after that was Ayatollah Khomeini. He made Iran more strict, with the women wearing full on robes and no face could be shown. Many people left the country.
4.Both Reza Shah and The Shah believed that modernizing their infrastructure and westernizing their country was best.
5. The Islamic revolution because Muslims did not like how The Shah changed their country.
6. The Shah believed in modernizing the country and Ayatollah belived in religion and keeping it old school.

1.) Muslim: one who follows the Islamic religion. Secular: non-religios.
2.) The difference between Sunni and Shi'a is that the Sunni muslims believe that a good leader is one who has the best qualities and shows righetousness towards their religion. And the Shi'a Muslims believe that the best leader is one who was related/ in the same family as the past leader. History, tradition, and heritage.
3.) Iran was known as Persia until 1935. They had a very strong empire, expanding their borders very quickly, sometimes without force. Also, Iran took place in two major wars against Rome and Greece. Persian's had a strong culture, religion, and languages (Arabic and Farsi). Persian's were proud to be Persians.
4.) Reza Shah and the Shah believed that Westernizing/ modernizing Iran's inferstructure was key. While they were in power, Iran was a beautiful place and became an internation destination. Although, they also put into place the SAVAK (a strong police force that caught people who spoke out against the Shah and put them into prison.)
5.) The Islamic Revolution occured because the Shi'a Muslims did not like the way that the Shah was running the country. So the Shah was taken out of power and then a religious ruler (Ayatollah) took power.
6.) The difference between the Shah and Ayatollah is that the Shah believed in modernizing/ westernizing the country; while the Ayatollah believed in strict religious practicing.

1. A Muslim is a person who practices the religion of Islam and “submits to the will of god.” The word secular is a term for someone who is not religious.
2. After Muhammad died, his Muslim followers disagreed on how his successor should be chosen. Sunni Muslims believed that his successor should be any Muslim who is a natural leader with good qualities. The Shi’a Muslims, however, believed that Muhammad’s successor should simply be someone who is as closely related to him as possible.
3. Iran once housed one of the oldest civilizations in the world, about 7000 years ago. However, it was known as Persia until 1935. Persia had a very unique culture that was very different from the Muslim culture of Iran. Persia had a massive army and formed itself into the vast Persian Empire. The Persian Empire often fought against Rome and Greece, but was not defeated until around the 7th century, when Islam was created and formed its own armies. These armies conquered the Persian Empire and incorporated its culture into Persian culture. The Muslim population of Persia grew so much that in the 16th century, it formed a purely Muslim (Shi’a) government. Then, in 1906, Persia westernized its government by appointing a king and building a parliament, like England. In 1925, Reza Shah overthrew this government and declared himself the Shah. He and his son were secular. Reza Shah then turned over his power to his son in 1941. His son, the Shah, modernized Iran and became very popular. However, religious Muslims dethroned him and recreated a religious government which took away the rights and privileges of Iranians and forced Islam upon them. Because of this, many Persians fled. This new government was headed by Ayatollah Khomeini.
4. Reza Shah and his son believed that it was more important for Iran to prosper and become educated and successful then for it to be religiously observant.
5. Once Iranian Muslims became very unhappy with the Shah, they began openly demonstrating and protesting. In some Iranian colleges, students learned more about Islam and had mass protests. Eventually, workers went on strike and Iran’s economy suffered. Then, the Muslim population revolted and overthrew the Shah with the help of the Muslim underground resistance.
6. The difference between the Shah and Ayatollah is that the Shah was secular and Ayatollah was religious. In fact, Ayatollah claimed that he was a descendant of Muhammad and forced the country to become completely Muslim. In addition, the Shah made life in Iran enjoyable and free, but Ayatollah took away the rights of Iranians and forced them to be religious.

1. Muslim: A person who practices the religion of Islam.
Secular: An adjective used to describe something that is non religious, such as a "secular government"
2. Sunni and Shi'a are both Muslims, however the Sunni believe that it does not matter what family a man comes from, and that his qualities are more important. The Shi'a, on the other hand, believe that a man's family means everything, and his qualities are not as important. This is a monarchy.
3. Iran started out about 7000 years ago as Persia, which was a very powerful empire that fought Greece and Rome. Persians had a very strong culture and language. In 1906, Iran began to try to become more like Europe. In 1925, Reza Khan overthrew the leaders of Iran and became known as "Reza Shaw."(The first revolution) In 1941, when Britain and Russia invade, Reza Shaw passed power down to his son, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who became known as "The Shaw." He modernized and Westernized the country. (made it more like Europe and America) Then people (mostly religious Muslims) started speaking out against the government against what he was doing with the SAVAK (his private military force) and the U.S. They protested and went on strike, which made their economy grind to a halt, and finally he was forced to leave the country in fear of being killed. After this, the country became strict and religious, and life there was much different. Many social freedoms and rights were taken away and in place of them were strict religious laws. Iran was much less culturally and socially rich, and because of this many left the country.
4. They thought having good technology and infrastructure and a strong culture was best for Iran.
5. The Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims did not agree on how the country should be lead, so each of them overthrew the government and ran the country their way.
6. The Shaw: Ran the country secularly, wanted Iran to be modernized and westernized, wanted Iran to have a strong culture.
The Ayatollah: Ran the country religiously, wanted to leave Iran's culture as it is, Did not want Iran to have a very strong culture, wanted many strict, religious laws.
