Debate Thread

So that was by far the most interesting debate, I thought. Lots of good lines, lots of serious answers on serious issues. All around, a good way to end debate season.

In the comment thread, post a quotation from each candidate that you found surprising or controversial! Plenty to choose from this time.

2) I didn't find anything surprising except that Obama wants to raise our taxes in this financial crisis. Overall, I thought that Obama seemed more relaxed... it was funny when Mccain kept talking about "joe plumber" and obama always says, "well look..." They have these sayings that they always use!! I would like to learn more about the international trade thing and about the money we owe to other countries and businesses. I can't believe that next year if someone doesn't do something about it we will owe nearly a trillion dollars!!

Thanks for the transcript anny!!
p.s.
how did you get your name to have those funny letters?

i agree with mccain that we should stop sending money to foreign oil companies.

i also agree with mccain that we should go ahead in stem cell research because it is what will find the cure for diabetes (type 1)that i have.

Lol Delaney...I was doing stuff on Wikipedia, and I decided to search up the letter 'a', and on the bottom, it showed the letter 'a' with a bunch of awesome accents and stuff. I was like, "Whoa that looked cool", so I copied and pasted that onto my name on Blogger...and I searched every letter in my name...it was awesome!

I think McCain did better overall(you should have one of those poll thingamabobs on how did better) and he left Obama kind of speechless after some of McCain's answers. It was much more entertaining than the past presidential/ vice presidential debates.

Logan (not the Dings) said...

I was wondering why your name looked so awesome. Cool!

This election is so interesting because there are qualities from both candidates that i would love to see as our president. The fact of the matter is that the economy could crumble if it is mistreated. My parents and I both think it is kind of surprising that Obama says he doesn't worry about CEO's and the top 5% of america's tax "bracket" when they will be the ones funding most of his governments projects. But i do agree that this was probably the more exciting debate.
It seemed like both candidates gave good answers to the questions, and they really tried to end the debates with on a high note.

Sorry this is so late. It was a tough night with the Phillies and the debate on. But hey, Phillies are going to the World Series, so that pretty much makes my day. Look for me with my Phillies hat on tomorrow. Hopefully ill be wearing it after the world series too.

You finally posted this blog! If you need it on this one, here's my response again:

I agree that this debate was much better that last week's. Both candidates answered the questions more thoroughly than they had before, most of the time exceeding their time limit.

I found it slightly silly that, despite my previous agreement with his healthcare plan, Barack Obama would be assigning a specific healthcare plan, seeing as some families require certain assistance that may not be covered on the required plan. John McCain however pleased me when he mentioned a middle class society member ("Joe the Plumber") and how he would like to help people like Joe. Previously, he had only mentioned affecting major corporations and businesses, while Obama had focused mainly on these middle class citizens.

I was also mad about how sometimes McCain would silently laugh whenever Obama spoke during the debate. I was sincerely disappointed in his lack of respect for his opponent. I also agree with Emily when she said that it was slightly offensive to say that Sarah Palin is a role model. Yes, she is pretty, but looks aren't everything if your running for vice president. She doesn't seem ready to takeover anything if something were to happen to McCain, and she seems behind on the general election overall.

I thought that it was interesting how McCain explained what it would be like for "Joe Wurzelbacher". I was wondering if McCain was lying and that the name Joe Wurzelbacher was fictional. Maybe it was to make fun of (Joe) Biden? Just wondering...sounds kinda lame, but yeah.

Mccain said that he would support overturning Rowe vs. Wade, Obama said that he thinks it shouldn't be overturned. They each said that each other's campaign was negative.

I thought it was suprising when at the very beginning, Obama said," Everybody knows that we are witnessing the worst financial crisis since the great depression. On a piece of mail that my mom got, it shows a newspaper title that says,"Worst crisis since 1930's,"(Which was when the great depression occured.)"With no end in sight." That caught my eye. I read it right as Obama was saying it. I will probably bring the form in to class on thursday. Something suprising that McCain said was,"Why would you want to increase anyone's taxes right now?" I agree with McCain because, with the cost of gas right now, there is no way anyone would vote for someone who wants to raise taxes at this time. It would just be to stressing to be paying more than we already are. Alexander :)

I found it very interesting how McCain used "Joe the Plumber" as an example of how Obama's tax plan would conflict with someone like "Joe." John McCain said
"I would like to mention that a couple days ago Sen. Obama was out in Ohio and he had an encounter with a guy who's a plumber, his name is Joe Wurzelbacher. Joe wants to buy the business that he has been in for all of these years, worked 10, 12 hours a day. And he wanted to buy the business but he looked at your tax plan and he saw that he was going to pay much higher taxes." This implies that "Joe" realized the disadvantage of Obama's Tax plan. I agree with McCain because it would be a large inconvenience to pay more for taxes. Even if you COULD afford it. I find it suprising how Obama wants to tax people who make over $250,000 because he thinks they can afford it(Many who make this might have to fly across the world now and then for business. Gas prices are high and therefore affect the price of flying). Barrack Obama said "Then Exxon Mobil, which made $12 billion, record profits, over the last several quarters, they can afford to pay a little more so that ordinary families who are hurting out there -- they're trying to figure out how they're going to afford food, how they're going to save for their kids' college education, they need a break." I can completely agree with that. Except Exxon Mobile makes way more than $250,000, and would not be impacted by these taxes. In all, I somewhat agree with both candidates but still dont have enough information to choose who I like the best.

It sounded like "Joe Whatsaburger", which is hilarious!!!
Also, I think that it was a big oops on Obama's part when he said that they wouldn't have the money to research for the cause of autopsy.

Logan (not the Dings) said...

McCain did use "Joe the Plumber" as an example a LOT!!!(like 5 times!!!)

i thought they actually answered the questions directly this debate

1.)I personally thought the debate was alot more interesting then the last one. During this debate the candidates were asked more questions about their opinion of each other or each others ideas.I loved it!! I can't believe how excited i got over this and i hope that whom ever deserves to presidant gets his chance to lead, NOT to just play dress up.
2.) And the difference between states and nations are a state has a smaller population and may be joined together in that area by religion, race, beliefs,or even ethnicities, and a nation could possibly be the whole world or an entire continent, but a nation is a large group of people living in the same area, but may or may not have the same beliefs.

1. I think that it is interesting that Obama wants to give 95% of working people a tax cut.
2. Miccian says that he is going to gove every person a 5,000 dollar taxe refund for healt care, but i think that would not help, because health care costs a lot more than 5,000

1) I think that Obama keeps repeating this is the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Also, that Mccain always smiles at Obama's replies to the questions and Mccain started to kinda look at Obama for the first time...

For John Mccain i was surproosed that he kept bringing up Joe the Plumber. I mean it was funny at first but, got pretty annoying by the thrid time. Obama didnt really say anything I was surprised by, but I think he could of been more aggressive.

so i couldn't find the debate blog thing so i'm commenting on here:
i kinda liked this debate, i thought the questions were better because it pretty much summarized all the little questions into one. and was "joe the plumber" a real guy, joe biden, or an imaginary person? i didn't get that.
what i thought that supprised me that mccain said was that he wanted to put the home owners first and lower taxes for people who have enough money to live on. And when he said sarah pailin was a rolemodel i was slightly offended because he was saying that women look up to an inexperienced woman who isnt all that smart about politics.
i didn't really find anything surprising about obama but when he started talking about free trade with south korea my mom explained that it is good for us but its tough for korea because they have to spend money to buy american goods and they have to work harder to produce a better product for the americans so its like a competiton and i know you probably thought i mentioned that because im korean but i couldnt find another thing that i found surprising
also i was spacing out when they were talking about an "acorn" (?) i didnt get that either

hey did any one realize how Obama said the words "slumps" and "screwy things" in his speech?? its was really weird. i bet u can find it in the transcript.

actually logan (not the dings), Obama and Mc Cain used "Joe the plumber" exactly 23 times. Don't worry, i didnt count it. i heard it in a youtube video about it. 23 TIMES!!!!! haha

McCain and Obama have become really close with Joe Sixpack and Joe the Plumber. I find their intest in guys named Joe questionable; what about all us middle class citizens that are not named Joe? Also, I heard McCain stutter a little when he was talking. I also think that they took a lot of time to answer each question. Something that I saw blogged about Sarah Palin kinda disturbed me. I don't understand why a vice president can't be beautiful or a former model or beauty queen. I think that sort of voting is prejudiced. What, do you think that just because you are a preformer or something you arn't smart? I think that America is better than that.

I rhought that it was intresting how obama kept comparing Mccain to Bush and then Mccain said, "I'm not Bush, if you wanted to run against him go back 4 years in time." And also how Mccain kept on bringing up how Obama is friends with bill aires. and also I think this debate was the best.

I thought it was really surprising when McCain brought up the arcane issues surrounding past terrorist and Obama's past relationship with them. I thought that this was interesting because there are so many bigger problems in the US that they should address other than something about a friend in the past. Also, when asked about the opposing parties VP that Obama did not motion anything about Palin when the question was what do you think about the other person’s candidate.

i agree with Gus on how it was interesting that McCain used Joe the plumber as an example of who would be effected by Obama's tax plan

I thought that this debate was a really important one. McCain won in my mind because he was really clear and understandable. A quote from him i, "I am a free trader...." , when Obama said that, "any trade agreement is a good trade agreement.." I thought it was interesting that they both brought up those ideas about trading. Also, I think that McCain won because of his description and how he laid up his plans and kept repeating, "he should stop spending money.." I think that's a good idea. No offense to McCain, but it's easier to make fun of him than Obama, but I think that he's a better canedate.

I totally agreed with McCain to lower corprate income tax like Ireland so businesses will be atracted to the US because its a cheaper tax. Then they set up offices and factories and that makes jobs. And when people have jobs they have money and buy stuff. And when people buy stuff the economy gets better. So i think thats really smart. Also i didn't agree with Obama when he said he was gonna spread Joe the Plumber's wealth because if you work hard for that money then you should be able to keep it.

I totally agree with kati on making fun of john mccain. he's way better than obama to me though

Hunter B said...

i also agree with Rachel and Kati McCain is so easy to make fun of but i support him

Isabelle said...

I agree with Kati on the making fun of McCain thing, cause it is totally true.

Anyway, I didn't find much surprising....most was just what they have said before, repeating over and over.... Like Delaney said about Obama raising taxes, it seems unlike what he's said before. That was pretty much it though.

Oh, and I also found i surprising how well McCain was doing compared to past debates! He usally isn't as good (nearly, not even close!) as Obama, but this time he totally surprised Obama with his amazing new debateing skills!

I just have to say that I think the person that was asking the questions in the debate.....(I'm sorrey I just cannot remember his name! I watched the debate where it kept saying his name in writing at the bottom of the screen whenever he was on camara, and you told me today in class, but I just CANNOT remember it for the life of me!!!!) anyway, I thought he asked some REALLY good questions!!! They made me go, "WOW that's deep!" For example, when he said something about both of the candidates saying rude thinks about their running mate in their campanes, and then asking if they where willing to say them in front of each others faces! Both of the candidates faces went . .
O !

I thought that McCain was nervous and it looked like he was more focused on attacking Obama than answering the questions. Obama said that Joe Bidenis a forein affares expert, and McCain said that Palen was tough ans a reformer.

I was surprised that the candidates didn't attack each other as much as the other debates. During the other debates both candidates were attacking each other more. I think that obama won this one even though I'm for McCain. Also I think McCain won the 1st
one and the town hall one was undecided. But I dont understand why obama would want to raise taxes at a time like this!! That is why I think McCain's tax plan would help a lot more because it would help so many more people. By the way, he thinks that taxes should be higher right? Well does he send in money to the US treasurey? I don't think so.

Parker I disagree with you because the cantidates, especially McCain, were on the offensive side. Obama went kind of towards the defensive side though.

From what I saw McCain had obama on defense at the begining and then he started to lighten up and they bost started throwing comments at each other. Obama said McCain was like bush then McCain said that if Obama wanted to run against bush he should have run four years ago.

Kristen Ochoa said...

I disagree with hunter b's statement because I think that they weren't direct and just kind of babbled to avoid answering the question. I TOTALLY agree with Arielle's comment!

* I found that what Mccain said about how he was going to help Joe the plummer buy his business was interesting, but I never caught o to how he was gong to help him, how he said he was going to put homers first was interesting, and how he would create millions of jobs in America was interesting, but kind of cheesy.

* I found that what Obama said about how he is giving small business in America tax cuts (which is about 95% of the U.s.) was interesting, how he said,"If we make investments now, they will benefit us in the future," was interesting because that was true, but he was stating the obvious, and how he said," We got to have a president that is going to advocating on behalf of American businesses.... I have no apology for that," was interesting because he seems to really care about the American businesses, while Mccain seems to care more about home-owners.

Kristen Ochoa said...

sorry when i said homers in my comment i meant home owners.

It was definitely the best debate so far! I liked the joe plumber disscussion. Also the split screen was good because you could see the other candidates reactions. (Half the time Obama looked like he was on the verge of saying some thing like "Can we get on with it!"

In the last debate I found one thing surprising that each Obama and McCain said. McCain said to Obama, " I am not President Bush. If you wanted to run against him you should have run 4 years ago. I am going to give this country a knew direction." Both Obama and McCain agree that everyone needs health incerence. Obama said that we created the auto indestery and we need to make a fuel efficent car in the U.S.

Logan moore, on your first comment you said that McCain left Obama speechless. I disagree. Because the candidates have a certain amount of time to answer the question, and then the other person gives their perspective. But sometimes the candidates answer a very short version of the asked question, and then flip it around to say what they really want to dicuss. I agree with Henry when he says that both candidates have qualities that would be good as president. Obama seems like a better communicator than McCain, and McCain seems like he can't seem to hide his irritation on Obama's comments.

I thought the first debate was the most interesting. I had never seen a debate before! In the first debate all the ideas were new and fresh; no one had ever heard them before. It was interesting to hear each senators differences and the thing they agreed on. After about half way into the second debate a lot of things were repeated. YAWN!!! (no one wants to hear the same things over and over again.)

BadLuckSam said...

I agree that the debate was the most interesting of them all. One thing that I found that Obama said that interested me was that a half of one percent of the federal budget are earmarks. One thing that Mccain said that interested me was that he was going to give everyone $5000 instead of encouraging employers to pay their employee's health insurance costs. I would think that insurance would cost more than that, especially for old people with various health problems. Overall, I thought that Obama did a better job, but Mccain did a better job than he did in previous debates.

Sorry this is so late. I was caught up watching the Chargers and final World Series game. Chargers suck, period. I hope the Red Sox win, though.

I thought this was a really interesting debate. Joe the plummer was kinda random. SNL acknowledged that on their Thursday update. Did u hear that Sara Palin was on SNL last night i didn't get to watch it but I have it recorded... anyway now on to my comment.

Random Facts I Didn't Know

1. America has a 450 billion dollar deficit.

There is more but that's all I could think of.

Obama

1.Obama says we can't drill ourselves out of our energy crisis.

2.He also said that Mccain is like Bush.

Mccain

1.He wants to be energy independent and make millions of jobs... me too buddy.

2.He also has funny body language and sticks his tongue out alot.

Oh and lastly, this is kinda random but what is the deal with Joe the plummer?

Obama:I thought that it was interesting that McCain has put out only negative commercials about Obama that posed that Obama is "dangerous" and that he is a "terrorist". I also thought that it was surprising that at one of Sara Palin's rallys people started to yell very offensive things about Obama and she did nothing to stop it.

McCain:I found many things surprising that McCain said. It seemed like he talked about what he knows how to do not what he will do. I found it very rude when he said to Obama " I am not Bush if you wanted to run against bush you should have run five years ago" I thought that that was rude and inappropriate for the situation.I also found that he got very defensive and tried to rise above everything that Obama said.I also found it surprising when McCain said that Obama is going to lead us into a depression. I think that the people watching the debate do not appreciate it when two candidates snap back and forth at each other.
